Gov Dave Jumps on Bandwagon and Platform at same time?

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Gov Dave released yesterday a copy of a memorandum and proposed resolution  to the Wyoming Legislature to push for an amendment to our U.S. Constitution – amending the 10th Amendment as well as the Interstate Commerce Clause, via Article V.

The following is from the Wyoming Governor’s website, the last link is to a pdf with memorandum and proposed resolution;

Gov. Freudenthal calls for real action to restore Wyoming sovereignty

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Gov. Dave Freudenthal is proposing to rein in expansive federal powers and is asking the Legislature to help.
“We need less talk and more action,” Gov. Freudenthal said as he asked the Legislature to lead an effort to curtail federal power by amending the federal Constitution.
The proposed amendment will “put teeth” back into the 10th Amendment and restrict the expansion of federal power under the Interstate Commerce Clause, the Governor said.
The attached memorandum and proposed resolution were sent to members of the Legislature Thursday.

January 18, 2010 10:34 AM EST by John Stossel

An obscure 2008 academic article gained traction with bloggers over the weekend. The article was written by the head of Obama’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, Harvard Law Professor Cass Sunstein. He’s a good friend of the president and the promoter the contradictory idea: “libertarian paternalism”. In the article, he muses about what government can do to combat “conspiracy” theories:

…we suggest a distinctive tactic for breaking up the hard core of extremists who supply conspiracy theories: cognitive infiltration of extremist groups, whereby government agents or their allies … will undermine the crippled epistemology of those who subscribe to such theories. They do so by planting doubts about the theories and stylized facts that circulate within such groups, thereby introducing beneficial cognitive diversity.

That’s right. Obama’s Regulation Czar is so concerned about citizens thinking the wrong way that he proposed sending government agents to “infiltrate” these groups and manipulate them. This reads like an Onion article: Powerful government official proposes to combat paranoid conspiracy groups that believe the government is out to get them…by proving that they really are out to get them. Did nothing of what Sunstein was writing strike him as…I don’t know…crazy? “Cognitive infiltration” of extremist groups by government agents? “Stylized facts”? Was “truthiness” too pedantic?

Salon.com’s Glenn Greenwald explains why this you should be disturbed by this:

This was written 18 months ago, at a time when the ascendancy of Sunstein’s close friend to the Presidency looked likely, in exactly the area he now oversees. Additionally, the government-controlled messaging that Sunstein desires has been a prominent feature of U.S. Government actions over the last decade, including in some recently revealed practices of the current administration, and the mindset in which it is grounded explains a great deal about our political class.

… What is most odious and revealing about Sunstein’s worldview is his condescending, self-loving belief that “false conspiracy theories” are largely the province of fringe, ignorant Internet masses and the Muslim world.

It’s certainly true that one can easily find irrational conspiracy theories in those venues, but some of the most destructive “false conspiracy theories” have emanated from the very entity Sunstein wants to endow with covert propaganda power: namely, the U.S. Government itself, along with its elite media defenders. Moreover, “crazy conspiracy theorist” has long been the favorite epithet of those same parties to discredit people trying to expose elite wrongdoing and corruption.

It is this history of government deceit and wrongdoing that renders Sunstein’s desire to use covert propaganda to “undermine” anti-government speech so repugnant. The reason conspiracy theories resonate so much is precisely that people have learned — rationally — to distrust government actions and statements. Sunstein’s proposed covert propaganda scheme is a perfect illustration of why that is. In other words, people don’t trust the Government and “conspiracy theories” are so pervasive precisely because government is typically filled with people like Cass Sunstein, who think that systematic deceit and government-sponsored manipulation are justified by their own Goodness and Superior Wisdom.

Syracuse Schoolchildren Upset Over White House Response to Letter

The students of the H.W. Smith School in Syracuse, N.Y., are upset with President Obama for answering an invitation to visit their school with a form letter, local television station WSYR reports. The children mailed the president a letter on Nov. 13, inviting him to come help them build a snowman. They included a photo of the group, and wrote about how building a snowman together would demonstrate unity and peaceful living
The reply they received from the White House was dated Nov. 6 — a week before they sent their letter — and was addressed to “students.” Most of the students said they did not expect the president to visit them, but they had hoped for something more personal than a form letter.

“I was disappointed because I think his office could have done better than that,” Kiana Furgeson, a sixth-grader at H.W. Smith said. Simeon Greenberg, a third-grader, added: “I felt disrespected. It was very disappointing to get that kind of response.”

The students decided to answer the White House with a complaint about its informal response, and sent Obama another letter asking him to consider having his staff write personal responses to his mail. “If they wrote the letter we received as an answer on a test, they would not have a passing grade because they did not answer the question,” the students wrote.

Petition to recall LA Senator Mary Landrieu

Clarice Feldman

The blog And So It Goes in Shreveport notes that a petition to recall Senator Mary Landrieu has been accepted  for filing by the Louisiana Secretary of State. Citizens have 180 days to file enough signatures to get this on a ballot:

Via Caught Him With a Corndog, there is an active petition to recall Senator Mary Landrieu:

“On Dec. 29, a recall petition was filed by Ruben Leblanc of New Iberia, for the recall of Mary Landrieu. Sec. of State Jay Darden stated that he WILL accept the filing.”

Kinda like chicken fried bacon, this limited time offer won’t last. Citizens have 180 days starting Dec. 29 so get with it today if you would like to see Me-ry “Louisiana Purchase” Landrieu hit the bricks before her service is up.

Go here for details and here to see the case for a recall.

If the story reported by The Dead Pelican this weekend holds true, that she used her vote for Obamacare to bargain for national democratic support for her brother’s mayoral campaign, I’d say more than a recall is in order. We’re keeping our eyes on that story and will update accordingly.

The blog Caught Him with a Corndog first broke the story and has a follow up to it  :

Per citizen filer Ruben T. LeBlanc, there will be an open meeting at the Freedom Forum on Thursday January 7th in Lafayette to discuss the recall of Mary “Gimme dem dollars” Landrieu.

Some background on Ruben LeBlanc: He is a 51 year old construction and oil field worker with no political background who has decided “enough is enough”. As of 14:21 December 29, 2009 Ruben LeBlanc filed a petition with the Secretary of the State of Lousiana, Jay Dardenne, to formally recall U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu.

The citizens of Louisiana are granted the authority to perform a recall election by  Section 26 of Article 10 of the Louisiana Constitution.

“10. If the recall passes, the public officer is recalled and removed from office and the office is declared vacant when the election returns are certified to the Secretary of State. The vacancy is then filled as usual. The recalled official cannot be appointed to fill the vacancy.”

Unholy Alliances
by David Horowitz

This section (http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/guideDesc.asp?catid=143&type=issue) contains resources discussing the alliances that have been formed between Western leftists and radical Islam, unlikely allies who have joined efforts to oppose America’s War on Terror and its war in Iraq. These are mainly (but not exclusively) de facto alliances, much as the Hitler-Stalin Pact was an alliance of convenience based on a common interest: the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

The core of today’s radical left consists of the ideological descendents of the communist/progressive left that wanted the West to lose the Cold War to the Soviet Union. They are the well-organized and immensely influential driving force behind the contemporary peace and civil liberties movements. Upon the foundation of its hatred for the United States, the radical left has forged an alliance with radical Islam, whose wellspring of anti-American hatred runs just as deep. On April 25, 2005 this hatred was expressed passionately by Member of British Parliament George Galloway, who was interviewed that day by the Iraq News Network on the subject of the War on Terror and the clash of Western and Muslim cultures. Galloway was asked, “You often call for uniting Muslim and progressive forces globally. How far is it possible under the current situation?” To this, Galloway replied:

“Not only do I think it’s possible but I think it is vitally necessary and I think it is happening already. . . . [T]he progressive movement around the world and the Muslims have the same enemies. . . . the Zionist occupation, American occupation, British occupation of poor countries, mainly Muslim countries. They have the same interest in opposing savage capitalist globalization which is intent upon homogenizing the entire world turning us basically into factory chickens which can be forced fed the American diet . . .

So on the very grave big issues of the day — issues of war, occupation, justice, opposition to globalization — the Muslims and the progressives are on the same side. . . . [To] use an English colloquialism, ‘If we don’t hang together we will all hang separately.’ Our enemies are very powerful and they are currently ruling the world, and if we don’t stop them they will finish both of us and they will be the new tyrants, new emperors of the world for a very long time to come if we don’t stop them. So it’s necessary to unite these two great forces. . . .
…The left is weaker and the Muslims are weaker because they are not together.”

In word and deed, both Western leftists (like Galloway) and radical Muslims make it plain that they consider everything about the United States to be evil and unworthy of preservation; that they wish to see American society and its way of life crushed by any means necessary, including violent revolution. Their position was well summarized by the now-infamous professor Ward Churchill, who asserted that terrorist violence directed against the United States is a morally justifiable response to what he characterizes as the U.S. government’s “rape” and “murder” of other peoples.

These sentiments are echoed by Osama bin Laden, who in 1998 issued the following edict: “We . . . call on every Muslim . . . to comply with God’s order to kill the Americans and plunder their money wherever and whenever they find it. We also call on Muslim ulema, leaders, youths, and soldiers to launch the raid on Satan’s U.S. troops and the devil’s supporters allying with them, and to displace those who are behind them so that they may learn a lesson. The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies — civilians and military — is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it.”

Radical Islam seeks purification and social justice by means of jihad, or holy war, whose highest ideal is martyrdom achieved while attempting to conquer an evil worldly power such as the United States, the Great Satan (and Israel, the Little Satan). The radical Islamist’s ultimate goal is to subdue the “infidel” nations and therein institute sharia, or Islamic law, so as to redeem the world for Allah. The socialist left, similarly, advocates revolution as the means of achieving its ends — eliminating capitalism and creating a socialist paradise on earth. Whereas Islamic radicals seek to purify the world of heresies and of the infidels who practice them, the radical left seeks to purify society’s collective “soul” of the vices allegedly spawned by capitalism — those being racism, sexism, imperialism, and greed. Just as Islamic radicals seek to impose their religion on the rest of the world in a totalitarian fashion requiring unwavering obedience, so do radical leftists seek to create an omnipotent socialist state that will control every aspect of daily life and will impose a universal brand of “social justice” on all mankind.

Central to both radical Islam and the radical left is an inclination to overthrow the existing order, so as to create a paradise on earth. This end ultimately justifies any means, and any alliance, that leads there. American leftists may find the bigotry and intolerance of Islamic radicals repugnant, but their desire to rid the world of U.S. “imperialism” and capitalism overrides this revulsion and beckons them to forge their alliance. As Osama bin Laden himself declared in a fatwa which he issued in March 2003: “The interests of Muslims and the interests of the socialists coincide in the war against the crusaders.”
